History and origins of the golden ratio, extract from this summer's course. Do you know how the golden ratio is used in painting? It goes far beyond the 2/3 and 1/3 rule, which is an oversimplification of this compositional principle. The golden ratio is used not only by the classics, but also by modern and contemporary artists. Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko and many others have used it. I'll give you more details in future videos. Good day and happy painting to you all.#Golden number #painting #Culturepainting #Composition # Abstract painting #Picasso #Rubens #De Kooningwww.culturepeinture.com
Are painting in general, and contemporary painting in particular, subject to rules and codes or not? What's your opinion?

Matisse's influence on the development of modern and contemporary painting is often overlooked. He was the first painter to experiment with new ways of representing depth, influenced by Japanese prints. This gave a new lease of life to contemporary Western painting, which finally freed itself from classical models of representation. We know Matisse for his elegant style, his apparent simplicity and his mastery of color, but we forget to mention that he was a true pioneer in the research that revolutionized modern and contemporary painting. Rothko and Zao Wou-Ki have both paid tribute to him for this!
Here's an extract from this summer's workshop on spatial ambiguity. The importance of Japanese prints is not limited to their stylistic contribution to Japanese art. They revolutionized the concept of depth in 20th century painting, notably through the work of Matisse and his famous painting "L'Atelier rouge". I hope you enjoy this extract.#Culturepeinture #Matisse #estampe #atelier rouge #peinturecontemporaine #musée #fondationlouisvuitton

In the brightness of his studio, Soulages lays down the black with familiar precision, then withdraws for a moment: the canvas speaks, he listens. Between mastery and doubt, he questions the light buried in the material, a humble researcher who lets himself be surprised by what he has just created.#CulturePeinture #PierreSoulages #AtelierDeLumière #GesteNoir #ArtEnQuête
Beyond the appalling chaos, Picasso's genius lies in the rhythmic structure that orchestrates his masterpiece, "Guernica". The composition is skilfully organized around a large central triangle whose apex is the lamp, projecting a harsh light that sculpts the forms and dramatizes the scene. This pyramidal structure, like the pediment of an ancient temple, stages the tragedy. The eye is guided by a precise visual cadence, traveling from the anguished figures on the right to the grieving mother and child on the left, via the wounded horse in the center. Horizontal and vertical lines respond to each other, creating a secret tension and balance in the midst of devastation. It is this pulsation, this skilfully orchestrated visual rhythm, that channels the violence of the scene and gives "Guernica" its timeless, universal power.Would you like a full analysis? An unexpected streak in the black paste, a reflection that captures the light differently... and everything changes. The work is no longer fabricated; it reveals itself. The painting leaves its creator to exist on its own, imposing its own evidence, its own light. It is the birth of a presence.#pierresoulages #pointdebascule #gestecreatif #lumiereetmatiere #outrenoir

Live from Art'Basel, analysis of a painting by Kenneth Noland. A founding member of the Washington Color School, which included Sam Gilliam, Morris Louis and Alma Thomas, Kenneth Noland was instrumental in shaping the language of post-war abstraction in the United States. His experimental approach to form, material and color gave rise to radical works that redefined painting.

Beneath its air of gestural chaos, Joan Mitchell's Hudson River reveals a rigorous composition. The underlying orthogonal structure organizes the space, while a rhythmic dynamic, akin to the flow of a river, gives life to her canvas. Each gesture, each interval, obeys a precise logic: that of the golden ratio, discreetly at work in this explosion of color.#joanmitchell #hudsonriver #artabstrait #nombredor #culturepainting
Joan Mitchell, a dazzling figure of abstract expressionism, has made color a language in its own right. From her New York beginnings to her European influence, her career is that of a woman who imposed her voice in a male-dominated environment, without ever softening her gesture or diluting her vision.Painting was, for her, a vital necessity. Her abstraction, far from being cold or intellectual, is visceral, lyrical and inhabited. A work in which the intimate becomes universal.#JoanMitchell #ExpressionismAbstract #ArtContemporain #AbstractionLyrique #FemmesArtistes #PeintureModerne

Joan Mitchell presents her first abstract canvases, marked by striking contrasts and assertive gestures: a veritable visual exploration that redefines the codes of painting. #joanmitchell #artabstract
Figure and City marks a turning point in Joan Mitchell's work: her last figurative canvas before she fully embraced lyrical abstraction. Les Échos d'un monde tangible (Echoes of a Tangible World) can still be seen, but is soon swallowed up by the gestural élan and chromatic fulgurances that would come to define her style. #joanmitchell #peinturemoderne #abstractionlyrique #histoiredelart #expressionnismeamericain

"Saint John the Baptist with the ram" - Caravaggio (circa 1602)In this powerful work, Caravaggio breaks with the traditional depiction of Saint John the Baptist. Far from the usual asceticism, the young saint is shown in a meditative, sensual pose, bathed in light and shadow. The ram, an enigmatic companion, symbolizes both sacrifice and tamed wilderness. A scene where mysticism and realism meet with intensity.#caravaggio #saintjeanbaptiste #artbaroque #clairobscur #peintureitalienne

Willem de Kooning, a major figure in Abstract Expressionism, left his mark on 20th-century art with his powerful, gestural compositions. This movement, born in the United States in the 1940s, values raw emotion and spontaneous gesture. Rothko's 'Untitled' (1948): a pillar of Abstract Expressionism. The technique of superimposing diluted layers creates subtle nuances between pink, orange and beige. The denser central orange draws the eye and structures the composition. In a letter addressed to young people, Matisse insists on the crucial importance of drawing, an act he considers vital. His words sound like a vibrant call, an invitation to explore the world through art. Yet behind this ardent passion lurks a palpable concern: that this creative flame will be snuffed out by the distractions of the modern world. A letter that inspires as much as it alerts, a poignant testimony to an artist's commitment to future generations.#Matisse #Dessin #Art #Créativité #Inspiration
"Rue Gauguet" is one of Nicolas de Staël's largest works, executed on plywood panel (199.4 × 240.3 cm). The painter lived and worked at 7 rue Gauguet, in a modernist-style villa-studio, from January 1947. Here, he painted directly on the floor, abandoning easel painting.#NicolasdeStael #RueGauguet #ArtModerne #Peinture #InspirationArtistique
A vibrant tribute to Nicolas de Staël, a visionary artist who brought together on canvas the memory, the lived moment and the future dream. Each work is a poetic act, an invitation to travel between the emotion felt, the buried past and the infinite possibilities. In 1952, Nicolas de Staël painted several canvases depicting bottles, particularly wine bottles, which became famous for their abstract style and color palette. Bottles were a recurring subject in his work, and he often depicted them in still-life scenes or in more abstract compositions.#abstrait #abstraitart #abstraitartiste #nicolasdestaël
Nicolas de Staël, Portrait de Jeannine (1941): immersed in an intense expressive period, where vibrant contrasts between luminous yellows, ochres and deep blues shape a captivating atmosphere. The outstretched hand subtly dialogues with the surrounding forms, recalling the Mannerist elegance of El Greco and the expressive melancholy of Picasso's blue period. A work in which color and form respond to one another to evoke emotion at the very edge of the canvas.#CulturePeinture #ArtExpressif #DialogueDesFormes #Contrastes #PortraitArtistique
Impressionism overturned the rules of painting in the 19th century.
