When working from a photograph, the idea is not to copy it slavishly but rather to reinterpret it within a system that allows it to be made into an aesthetic object. A good painting has its own requirements that a photograph does not always fulfill.#culturepainting #artisticinspiration #composition
Composing from a photo isn't about copying, it's about learning how to transform an image into a painting... Many amateur painters work from photos... but a photo doesn't think like a painting, it records, whereas a painting constructs. In this reel, I'll show you how to reinterpret a photo using real compositional tools: the golden ratio, ovals, obliques, rhythms, directions... In other words, how to move from an image that's been subjected to... to an image that's been constructed. Because painting isn't just about reproducing what you see: it's about organizing, prioritizing, linking, transforming... And that's often where painting really begins. #culturepainting 1TP5Artistic inspiration #composition
Recently, in our private exchange group, I commented on the work of a student from the Culturepeinture community, who posted various stages in the execution process that one goes through when painting with a certain conscience. #culturepeinture #composition #peinturemoderne #inspiration artistique
We've often talked to you about expression... but too rarely about construction. But the great painters didn't just rely on emotion: they knew the profound laws that organize the image, including the golden ratio and symmetry.#culturepeinture #inspirationartistique #peinture
We often believe that all colors are created equal... But in reality, there's a natural hierarchy of intensities: primary colors are, by nature, more dynamic, more saturated, more powerful than secondary colors, and secondary colors themselves have more presence than tertiary colors... In other words: not all colors have the same weight, nor the same energy. But there's another, more discreet problem: for several years now, the industry has been producing increasingly ambiguous colors, using inferior pigments or mixtures that should never have existed. For example, “ultramarine cobalt” blues...when ultramarine and cobalt are two very different tones. Why do such mixtures exist? Often for reasons of cost, not for pictorial reasons. And when manufacturers think first as industrialists rather than painters, it ends up blurring our perception of tones, intensities... and therefore of the paint itself. That's why it's essential to learn to recognize the true nature of colors. And if you're looking for a very good brand, with beautiful pigments, I can already tell you about this one: Golden. #culturepainting
When working with color, it's useful to know certain concepts: intensity, value, temperature and luminosity. Among other things, this enables you to control contrast intensities. I offer my students a number of exercises to help them clarify and master these concepts. This often takes them a step further. #culturepeinture #peinture #artabstrait #peinturecontemporaine
Our assistant Graziella has had a minor accident and is recovering for a few days. We've sent her this video to show our support. Love and solidarity can put a smile on your face... and your knee 😅#culturepeinture #l'artquarium #inspirationartistique

Here's a slightly technical video, an extract from the last summer workshop. It talks about certain aspects that may seem incomprehensible, but which are real questions when you're consciously working on a painting. I hope it will be of interest to some of you. #culturepainting #artmodern #composition
Has post-modernism liberated art... or emptied it of its reference points? In this interview, we talk about transmission, mastery, and that idea that has become commonplace:👉 “Everyone is an artist.”👉 “Rules no longer matter.”👉 “Beauty doesn't exist. ”But is it really that simple? Is being a master just about creating...or about being the holder of a long chain of knowledge, a tradition, a language built up over time? And when we see certain contemporary works, the question comes up again:is everything really worthwhile?🎨 Does beauty still have a place in contemporary art?📚 Do we need to know the rules to be able to go beyond them?🧠 Total freedom... or confusion?
In the 20th century, painting broke all the rules. All the way to Jackson Pollock's gestural painting: drips, splashes and splatters. And the classic reaction: 👉 “My 2-year-old daughter can do the same.” Pollock didn't just throw paint at random: his gestures were oriented, his masses balanced, his tensions thought out, and he mastered the principles of structure and the relationship between elements. This is often the source of confusion: we see the gesture... but we don't see the invisible architecture.
Behind what seems spontaneous, instinctive, almost wild... is often hidden a very deep construction. In this ink by Zao Wou-Ki, I show my students how elements of structure, rhythm, and even circles invisible at first glance appear. An excerpt filmed during my workshop in Ferrières-en-Gâtinais in 2025.What if a painting by a professional artist contained much more than what we see at first glance?!
Today, we're taking a look at Claude Monet's Impression, soleil levant, and above all, at a super-strong technical detail: how Monet “blocks” the red note of the sun so that it remains in the background of the painting, without “jumping” to the foreground.👉 The secret: a neighboring contrast (the crane / dark element close to the sun)and above all the very dark boat in the foreground, which serves as an anchor in depth. The rhythm of the boats builds the distancethe water/sky dialogue in the writing of the key.Keep in mind for your paintings:if you set a very dynamic note in the distance, remember to put a strong element in front of it to hold it in place.
Artificially-generated images can be stunning, but do they convey something profound? 👉 Do they touch the heart? 👉 Do they touch the soul? 👉 Or do they simply reproduce effects?
(PART 1/2) At Art Basel, I show you how Kenneth Noland organizes the circulation of the eye in a geometric painting.👉 We first enter through the yellow👉 Then the eye circulates between green, red, blue👉 The square and L shapes create a real reading logic👉 And there's a super interesting spatial ambiguity: the planes seem to move forward / backward depending on how we lookGeometric painting isn't “cold”: it's very constructed, very lively, and full of movement. What do you see first, you? 👀 #KennethNoland #ArtBasel #culturepainting
Can artificial intelligence really replace a painter? At a time when music, cinema and culture are undergoing profound change, one question becomes inescapable:👉 Can an AI capable of absorbing all artistic criteria reproduce a painting to the point of deceiving us? In this exchange with Gilbert Wolfisberg, the debate is head-on.
Workshop atmosphere and student work.
There are places where you learn to paint, and there are places where you learn to see.At Artquarium, in Geneva, you don't just come to “make a painting”, you come to discover that painting is a language, a language that is demanding, profound, structured... and infinitely alive. Here, there are concentrated silences.Looks that doubt... then understand.Hesitant gestures that become sure.Students who, little by little, are no longer copying - they're building. We're talking about shapes.Contrasts.Depth.Rhythm.But above all...We're talking about transformation.Seeing my students make this language their own, seeing them move from fuzzy intuition to clear awareness,is without doubt the greatest joy of my profession.Thank you to each and every one of you for your trust. The adventure continues.🎨 Artquarium - GenevaPainting is a language. And you can learn it.#culturepainting 1TP5Painting 1TP5Artistic inspiration
Many look at the abstract. Few know how to decode it. Without tools, the work remains opaque. With the right codes, it becomes obvious. Beauty is not in the subject. It's in the construction.
Here's a technical video on the different types of representation, modelling (illusion of volume, classical painting), modulated flat tints (variations and modulations in planes, from the Impressionists onwards) and flat colors (contemporary painting). 1TP5Painting #culturepainting #artmodern #artcollector

Mark Rothko's poetry and structure: in this brief analysis of one of Rothko's works, we see that behind the poetry and sensuality of his painting, there is a reflection on composition, notably using the golden ratio and geometry.

Do you know the difference between the classical concept of depth, known as «definitive», and a more contemporary concept called "spatial ambiguity", which has marked all 20th-century painting and comes from Japanese prints?
A brief analysis of Nicolas de Staël's painting «Le Compotier», which illustrates the search for new harmonies and a new pictorial language. It is interesting to note that this search does not exclude a certain coherence.#culturepeinture #artabstrait #peinture #histoiredelart
After the Second World War, something broke in the history of painting: the classical harmonies were no longer sufficient, and the fall, the dissonance, the chaos, the heteroclism appeared - not as gratuitous disorder, but as a new language.Through this work by Nicolas Dostal, I analyze these new harmonies, which are often invisible at first glance.Without reading codes, you think you're looking at chaos; with the right tools, you discover a sensitive architecture, a profound coherence, a demanding beauty.Painting didn't disappear after the war; its grammar changed, and learning to read it means learning to see differently.#culturepeinture #peinture #histoiredelart #artabstrait #nicolasdestael
Painting never evolves on its own; it moves forward in constant dialogue with other arts - and contemporary music has played a major role in the search for new pictorial harmonies. In the XXᵉ century, composers like György Ligeti explored dissonance, sound masses, micro-variations, tensions without classical resolution. This way of thinking about sound has had a profound influence on contemporary painting: color as vibratory matter, composition as a field of forces, harmony no longer as a wise balance, but as a living tension.Understanding these links allows us to better read today's painting -#culturepainting
Here's an extract from my lecture on Nicolas de Staël and contemporary painting. What influence has contemporary classical music had on the development of what we call «Les Nouvelles Harmonies» (New Harmonies)? Painting, like music, has sought to break away from classical harmonies in order to experiment with new territories and propose a language more in tune with the reality of the 20th century. #culturepeinture #histoiredelart #artmoderne #expressionnismeabstrait #nicolasdestaël
How to organize contrasts, beyond the subject represented. Landscape, human bodies, patches of color, it doesn't matter. The idea is to propose a shift across the entire surface, hierarchizing and inverting contrasts: dark surrounded by light and light surrounded by dark. Today, I'm sharing a 14-minute video in which I analyze two works that, on the surface, have nothing in common: a Puvis de Chavannes and a Rothko. And yet... the same silent laws are at work.Shapes, composition, the breathing of space, lines of force, the Golden Number: these technical elements span the centuries and link the masters to one another.Beauty is not born of emotion or spontaneity alone. In this video, I show you how these invisible principles structure the image, from symbolist painting to the most stripped-down field of color.Enjoy your discovery ✨🎨#culturepeinture #rothko #puvisdechavannes #peinture #histoiredelart #peintureabstraite

Continuation of the analysis of the Composition of a painting by Joan Mitchell. Discover the various circles hidden beneath her painting, enabling her to organize her space and impart underlying movements to her painting. If you think painting is all about spontaneity and creativity...we haven't told you everything! In fact, painters have always used geometry to organize their space and create links between the different parts of a painting. #culturepainting #joanmitchell 1TP5Painting #expressionismabstract #artmodern #composition
But behind Joan Mitchell's powerful gestures, there's an invisible architecture, a rigorous composition that organizes space, balances masses and guides our gaze.In this reel, I show you how, beneath the apparent freedom of gesture, there are hidden lines of force, rhythms, axes and relationships of tension that structure the whole canvas. It's this tension between control and letting go that gives his painting its depth and power.👉 Look closely at the lines, observe how everything fits together...And tell me in commentary: did you know these principles of composition?Or did you think it was all just instinct?#JoanMitchell #PeintureAbstraite #ExpressionnismeAbstrait #AnalyseDArt #Composition #CulturePeinture #LangagePictural #ApprendreLaPeinture #ArtModerne #PeintureGestuelle #artcontemporain
